Why Non-Targeted URLs Appear in Your "Landing Page" Breakdown

Updated today

It can be confusing to see URLs in your reports that don't match your experiment’s targeting rules. However, this does not mean the experiment is running on the wrong pages.

The Difference Between a "Targeted Page" and a "Landing Page"

The "Landing Page" dimension tracks the first page a user visits during their session. It does not necessarily represent the page where they encountered your experiment.

How it happens:

  1. Entry: A user lands on your Homepage (Landing Page / the page they first landed on).

  2. Navigation: They click a link to your Product Page.

  3. Trigger: Your experiment is targeted only to Product Pages. The experiment fires now.

  4. Reporting: In your breakdown, the data for this user is attributed to the Homepage, because that is where their session began.

Key Takeaway

Because users often navigate through several pages before hitting your experiment’s targeting rules, your reports will naturally show a variety of entry points. This is expected behavior and confirms that your session-based tracking is working correctly.
